My teeth are in very bad shape, due to rampant decay from Cancer treatment and no dental coverage for approx 15 years. The dentist I have just started to see, want to do restorative work on some teeth and bridges and crowns. This will cost me approx. $2000. for the next five years with the dental coverage I finally have at my new job. I cannot afford this kind of money. I clear $880.00 a pay and that barely covers my living expenses. I am also 51 years old and have just started putting $50/mos into RSP's. I am nervous about the future, obviously, and am concerned if for some reason I don't have a dental plan in the future, that I will really be in trouble, if this kind of work is started and then can't be finished. I have considered all of my options for a number of months now, and I have decided that due to my personal circumstances, that dentures would be the best way for me to proceed. But I have a feeling it may be difficult to find a dentist who will do this for me.
How do I find a dentist who will give me full dentures.?
maybe i am not reading the total out of pocket money correctly because 2000 dollars is nothing to be able to NOT wear dentures.
on the other hand- you are correct in thinking most dentists will be reluctant to go to dentures because if it can be realistically saved - how much nicer it would be to not have to worry with bone loss and relines ect on dentures that move and slip and do not chew properly like your original teeth.
BUT if you are insistent on not going to all the fixed dental work- i would suggest asking to consult with another dentist- taking all your xrays with you and see if it might be feasible to extract the worse teeth but going to partials instead of full dentures- especially on the lower which is most likely where you will have the most trouble. or you could consider a full denture on the upper and partials for the lower.
a partial is Nice because if you are able to save teeth to hook the partial around- it will come in and out of your mouth and you will have to have great hygiene - but it give the lower more stability and chewing power.
i have heard that you lose 80% of your chewing function when you go to dentures and when you imagine life without relishing a good steak because you cannot chew it as thoroughly- it makes you think twice
good luck with your decision and congrats on your cancer recovery
